THE REVIEW.

In the sixth of our review series, we attended the establishment of The Blue Goose Tavern, in Mimico (south Etobicoke), on May 16th (friday). We went with guests - Dan the Man and Steve the Geo.

We got there around 8pm, and sat at a nice table. Great bar/tavern atmosphere - awesome wing ambiance. The place wasn't too crowded, and had a young to middle aged clientele. Real cozy. The beer server, who wasn't allowed to serve food (you have to go to a separate counter to order your food), was a cool, outspoken guy. A man's man. Beer and wings and chicks on his mind. And money.

You pay as you go for the beer and the food, so there is no bill at the end (good!). A semi-tough atmosphere, but cozy as well. Definitely a repeat visit. The beer, generic Canadian stuff, was $12.50 a pitcher, an okay price. The wings were cheap too, at $5.95 a pound (same as Einsteins). They had a deal where you could get 100 wings for 15% off the price. But even with 5 guys we didn't have enough guts to eat 100 son. We ordered, at first, 4 pounds - 2 medium, 2 hot. And it wasn't enough so we ended up with three more pounds, all hot. The hot sauce was Franks, with added spices.

Not the cheapest experience though, and it ended up costing each son about $25 for the night. But great wing ambiance.

Atmosphere, no nonsense, Brendan Shanahan.

I expected some sort of fight that night after hearing about the fierce reputation of the Blue Goose and it's even fiercer city, Mimico. The word has it that Brendan Shanahan of the Red Wings (after early season end care of the Mighty Ducks) haunts the Goose, but he didn't make an appearance that night. Maybe he was working on his golf swing at Glen Abbey. Anyhow, there was some very classic comedy sessions that night, and we had some new faces around the table. I liked the Blue Cheese a lot...G and I can never agree on it.

I loved the approach the Blue Goose took to their wings. The result was a very creamy, Buffalo-style chicken wing that seemed to take a recipe we experimented with earlier to another level (Frank's Hot sauce, vinegar, paprika, etc.) The price was very reasonable, and the people were congenial. They were pretty big wings too, but not as big as Einstein's. I would say that we have found our wing-haven in Etobicoke. If going to Einstein's is like taking a holiday, then Blue Goose is definitely a long-weekend getaway.

Yes, another near perfect if not perfect wing place. This one will forever be competing for the throne
with Einstiens, and the reason, the tender smooth buttery meat, oh golden, and you pay for everything seperately as soon as you order, with cash, holy shit golden again. You never have to worry about how much the whole meal will cost later, and the sauce is good because you don't need a lot of it.  It sinks into the wing, like sace on your place, AND the bar atmoshere scores high for wicked ambience.  The only critisim is the price and size of the wing when compared to Einstiens, but the tenderness and finesse of the wing totally makes up for that minor loss.

This visit brought me back to the old days, when I was growing up in Mimico (in a house down the street essentially from the Blue Goose), when my dad, and sometimes my mom, would go with friends to the Goose for a night out. Really the only good bar to go to in South Etobicoke. South Etobicoke is a bit rednecky-hicky, but the Goose goes back many years and is a traditionally great spot in Mimico, and is renowned locally for such an ambiance. Brendan Shannahan, NHL great, is from Mimico, and when he comes home, he heads to the Goose. And for good reason - awesome wing ambiance.

The night, altough it ended up costing me nearly $30 for the wings and beer, was pretty good. Comedy a plently, with guests Dan and Steve. The beer was good enough for the experience. Now lets talk wing.

Fantastic texture and meat and sauce - the meat and sauce (a plenty) flowed off the bone and went down smooth and easy. The hot wasn't that hot though - but used Frank's hot sauce (the best out there), and the hot was rather similar to medium. So I guess someone if they were so inclined, could order the suicide and come away happy (and not dead). The blue cheese sauce was pretty good - but a little to mayo-ey for me. More blue cheese is good, although other wing experts thought it was a fantastic blue cheese. The wing size, however, was not as big as Einsteins. If this place found Einsteins-size wings, then they would have a definite 5. Although Einsteins medium sauce is the best in the world. But this place is a close second to Einsteins, and is definitely a repeat visit, for the wings and the ambiance. Bring friends!
