In the first of our review series, we decided to attend the establishment of Montana's, in Etobicoke (address above), on April 18, 2003. A religious holiday. If we were religious. Which we aren't. And run from the wrath of whomever. Normally, we plan on attending a different establishment each week, and not necessarily on any given day of that particular herewithin week.
Our visit commenced at approximately 8pm, wherewithin we sat at a clean table in the bar section of the restaurant, rather than in the restaurant section. The restaurant was fairly busy, with a mixed clientele. We were promptly asked for our selection of a beer, and we chose a pitcher of Heiniken (the popular Dutch brew). Purchasing expensive imported beer is not the norm, and we probably won't go with it very often. Whilst we were seated at semi-comfortable bar seats, kind of in the middle of the bar, we were watching NHL playoff action on TV, with middle of the road music on the PA (mainly "oldies"). The restaurant had a "suburban", family vibe to it, while the decoration was that of a midwestern, ranch feeling, a feeling I'm sure George W. and his British and Australian friends enjoy so often whilst barbequing their Canadian and Mexican non-supporting-Iraq-war friends.
The beer mugs arrived, and were frosted and cold, making it a much better beer experience. The pitcher of beer, although overpriced (as is the norm), was tasty son. We then promptly ordered our selection of wingdom, wherewithin the bartender/waiter gave us the selection of hot, medium, mild, and honey garlic. We won't ever be selecting the honey garlic type, because we suggest it is too much of a "candy-sugarary" wing, rather than a good solid chicken wing. Trim ordered the hot, Left Wing the medium, and G. Had the mild. The wait was long, although reasonable (around 25 minutes). A busy friday night could explain that situation.
The expense of the restaurant was rather high - our final tally was near $70 (tax and tip included). We did order more food after the wings, and the imported pitcher was more expensive then a normal domestic pitcher, but still, fairly expensive for a wing experience. The price for 1 lb (8 wings) was $7.99 (fairly high), and for 2 lbs (16 wings) was $13.99 (2 dollar difference).

Summary
Montana's was a suburban, run of the mill place to dine on wings. I was fairly pleased with my wing experience, but it was generally pretty safe (except for giving us the wrong wings from what we ordered). I would expect the same wings from other Montanas in the GTA. The ambience is akin to those nouveau Tex-Mex roadhouse operations: over-priced and over-kitched. We asked the server if she could enlighten us as to the makeup of their wing sauce, and she promised to tell us but never did. She did mention the abundance of garlic that I detected. As far as large-scale chains go, Montana's is a fierce competitor for wings, but loses points for screwing up the order, uneven distribution of wing sauce, and weak Blue Cheese sauce. There was a relatively long wait for wings as well.

Montana's had a very original feel and taste, I've never tasted any wings like it, although they weren't without criticism. I ordered the hot wings, and there was like no sauce man, what the fuck, you need sauce, and they tasted more like medium wings. The waiter also got our order mixed up, oh well, we figured it out. I like the texture even though it's more like batter than chicken skin, good overall. Done. Sauce? Michael?

The service was good, although we had a few people doing it (who does the tip go to? In a jar probably). Although it seemed as though the niceness was a little forced at times, it was still a pleasant sitting. However, the setting was a little uncomfortable for a wing experience, probably because of the family, suburban type feeling, and the fact that we were sitting at a table (albeit very clean) with people in front of us and behind us. It was busy, so getting a better seat might go around next time.
Overall, it was good, but only really because of the wings. Other than that, just a plain, overpriced restaurant. I'm not suggesting it was a bad experience, just normal. Not that cozy. But what made it enjoyable was the fact that the beer was cold (essential) and the wings (and other food items) were good (the wing ambiance, however, was fairly low.)
The wing sauce (sace? guards) and chicken was very good and tasty. The blue cheese dressing was not actually blue cheese dressing. It was still tasty, but was more of a runny mixture of ranch and blue cheese dressing. Still tasty though, but not the best for wings. The mild wings were mild, however, the hot and medium both tasted the same, and were neither that hot nor that medium (i.e. because they both tasted similar, the hot didn't have enough hot sauce, and the medium had a little too much). Good spices though, and I found there was plently of sauce. The texture was good - deep fried, but in places there was too much deep fried chicken skin and batter (rather than chicken, or rather than a thinner coating full of sauce). The size was good - large, in fact some of the largest wings in the city, but they were too overpriced. 8 wings for $8 - bit expensive for the normal person. But overall, the food is very good. I would suggest that anyone going to the establishment to experience the wings and the beer should go for that reason, but if you're just going for hunger, and/or to get loaded, go somewhere cheaper. The price is probably my biggest beef (or chicken, as it were).
