In the second of our review series, we decided to attend the establishment of Original's, in uptown Toronto (address above), on April 25, 2003. Friday son.
Our visit commenced at approximately 8:30pm, wherewithin we were firstly amazed by the hot hot chicks working there, and then waited for a long time to get a table (30 minutes or so, but reasonable for a friday night hotspot). We then sat at a clean table in the restaurant section of the restaurant. The restaurant was very busy, with an older, yuppie clientele. We were the youngest guys in the bar at first, but the guys that come to pick up chicks arrived shortly thereafter. We were asked for our selection of a beer, and we chose a pitcher of Canadian. Good and cheap son. We ended up ordering two because they were $12.70 a pitcher. And beer. Good deal (no deal). Whilst we were seated at comfortable seats, at the front of the restaurant, overlooking Bayview, we were watching NHL playoff action on TV (Ottawa beating Philly), with middle of the road music on the PA. The restaurant had a urban, uptown vibe to it, while the decoration was that of a midwestern, ranch feeling, similar to Montana's. But this place seemed to be the original santa fe type establishment. Hence the name Original's.
The waitresses were hot and all, but they didn't give out good vibes. As soon as we got there, with many of them around, we noticed they weren't into their job that much. Seemed as though too many guys had hit on them, and they didn't like their job. Our waitress, although very cute and rather hot, wasn't the most enthusiastic or quick or talkative server. Just kind of there.
We then ordered our selection of wingdom (not wingdom), wherewithin the menu gave us the selection of hot, medium, mild, honey garlic, suicide, and devastator. The menu warned against those purchasing the extra hot wings - no refunds! So be careful when you order the extra hot wings. We won't select the extra hot wings ever really. Trim ordered the wing-rib entree, (medium wings), Left Wing ordered the hot wings, and G. Had had the medium, with side salad. The wait to get a table was long, but the wait to get our food was short (thus good).
The expense of the restaurant was rather high - our final tally was near $80 (tax and tip included). We did order two pitchers, and some extra food, but still pretty expensive for a wing experience. The price for 1 lb (7-8 wings) was $7.95 (fairly high, but came with fries, so good, although the fries probably cost 25 cents out of $7.95), and for 2 lbs (16 wings) was $14.95 (1 dollar difference).

Original's seems to brand itself as the "original" Santa Fe style saloon. It does feel more authentic than some of the suburban tex-mex chains, but they need to work on the authenticity of their wings and buy a parking lot. First, we had to wait for 20 minutes while they decided whether or not we should get a table (two tables had opened up and they were debating as to which party should get the table...very bad form). Then our indifferent waitress arrived and asked..."so, you guys want drinks?" No "hi, how are are you?" or even "How's it goin', fellas?"...but we were there for the wings, so I let all of these lapses in service go. She brought us a pitcher of Canadian and we let the comedy roll.
And what about the wings? Well, once again, the wait staff mixed up our orders. I ordered hot wings while G. Had ordered medium, and of course they got mixed up. Let's do a crosssection of Original's wing...the wing was too deeply fried and greasy. It felt like some species of sponge from the ocean deep. They did use Frank's hot sauce which adds points, but they were not liberal enough with it. Their idea of medium and hot is less sauce, more sauce, or so it would seem. Anyway there wasn't enough sauce on my errant mediums. Now let's talk about the meat..."magnifique." Somehow these Original's guys had found some damn fine meat to fuck up. Once I got past the sponge skin, the meat underneath was juicy, tender, soft...fall-off-the-bone goodness. They get major points for the meat - it was not stringy in the least and these were some massive clubs. And then I tried the blue cheese salad dressing...pretty runny, but I love blue cheese so I kept dipping.
We had a good time that night and invented some very classic comedy that night. In my opinion, Original's has to learn about using their deep fryer to its full potential and maybe trying out a few variations on the sauce front, not just more Frank's or less Frank's. And their waitresses are so durned pretty...couldn't they just smile a bit and spread the love? Maybe once they sort out what's hot and what's medium.

Well, L'originals was a semi enjoyable wing experience, the meat was beautiful Johnny, and regardless of what the other wing-nut's say, I enjoyed the battery texture which reminded me of the good ol montana style. Unfortunately like our partner Montana, I prefer SAUCE, don't chince on the mince, you need to douse those chickens, in lots of SAUCE. We were standing at the door waiting to be seated for at least 15 minutes watching other people eat, wow what a tease. Although the ladies were looking fine, and it was friday night (Sars?), and when the bill came, gasp, pretty expensive, although the beer is to blame for that and I ordered a little extra. Oh yeah, a bonus: the wings came with fries - when does that ever happen? I was shocked, but it only adds more points to the wing bank of my overall wing experience (of 3.5).

This visit to Originals presented some very classic comedy sessions. So that made the night a fun one, but the restaurant and wings were only so-so. The service was alright, I mean, the waitress was hot with a thick dark full body and lips, but she was pretty quiet and unenthusiastic about her job. Where's the love? She mixed up Left Wing's and I's orders - he got medium, I got hot. But the difference was minimal, and the medium was not hot enough, as was the hot. Did notice Frank's hot sauce though. Good choice. The wings were good and big and full of meat, and the meat was really good, but there was too much batter on the wings - they were too deep fried. And there wasn't enough of the sauce, which was a good sauce. Too much batter and skin, not enough sauce. Also, it wasn't hot enough. Thus, it made for an okay wing experience. Also, the blue cheese sauce was not very good - rather it was just blue cheese dressing - runny. I normally dip a lot, but these past two experiences (Montanas and Originals) with salad dressing rather than blue cheese dip have left me dipping less than I usually do. Uncooth.
The restaurant had an uptown vibe to it, meant more for the family or older crowd. And the waitresses and hostesses, although very very hot, weren't that too happy about their job, thus making it a good, but not great wing experience. No smiles from the staff or the wings. But smiles on our mouths due to extreme comedy. SARS? The wings were alright and the restaurant was pretty pricey, but the wings came with fries, which was good, and I had a side salad which made the wings and fries digest easier. Made me full, but not a place I'd go back to for the wing experience. Run done son. Not run.
