THE REVIEW

In this wing escapade, we went searching for new and exciting wing places in Etobicoke. We tried Highway 27, Airport Road, and the likes, and came to a few spots unworthy of wingdom. Walt's, on Airport Rd., had one pound of wings at $10 a pound. PASS. Automatic boneyard.

We eventually settled on Orwell's, on Bloor St. at Islington. The bar was cozy, but had a hotel bar, or lounge type ambiance. Felt like old sophisticated divorced (or not) Kingsway men would come here to pick up younger women. So not an ambiance or sports bar or university bar (Office, Einsteins), but still good enough.

The menu was cool - it had wing and chicken finger combos, which were rather expensive, and had orders of wings similar to Einsteins (rather than by the wing or by the pound). A large order, which we obtained, was 18 wings for $11.45, whereas a regular order was 12 wings at $8.45. Pretty good. We ordered premium beer, which was great, and then hot wings.

We then decided to head next door to Mahoneys for their 30 cent wings. See the boneyard for a small review of this horrible experience. But Orwell's was good.

I felt like I was middle-aged sales guy on a business trip, having a drink at the bar downstairs in the local Holiday Inn in Muncie, Indiana, trying to pick up the most decent chick in the place to come up to my hotel room for rum and cokes, a Chuck Norris movie, and a quickie-even though I wasn't trying to pick up since I am happily engaged. It was just the way the sax-playing, Rayban wearing, neon Miami-vice ambience of the place spoke to me. It's due for a makeover. It feels like a time capsule, but not in a good way. The clientele certainly looked like they were trapped in the time warp.

And the wings...well, the best of a bad lot on the Bloor-Islington strip. The other guys say the Office has good wings, but I've never had them-maybe once, but I don't remember. Whatever you do, don't make the mistake of going to Mahoney's next door. They advertise 30 cent wings, but in this case, you really get what you pay for. Thankfully Trim got the bill on that one.

Overall -Not bad - I'd drive the extra 5 minutes for Montana's next time.

I wasn't really impressed when I first walked in. Maybe it was the miserable rainy day we had that night or something, but the vibe was very loungy and depressing. The waitress was nice but the service was slow and the wings were O.K.  I like it when you pick up a nice hot wing, and the steam from the sauce goes up your nose, nice, these wings had that. They were also very reminisent of buffalo style, which I dig, but I got a couple of horrid tasting ones.  It tasted rotten, but it was only two wings out of the eight I had, still uncozy.

Price was good but not great, overall, I wouldn't reommend this place to anybody, but I don't think it's bad enough for the bone yard. Hey, take our advice with a grain of salt, you might love it, whoever you are.

The service was good, and the waitress, although semi-old, was pretty nice and cozy. Long wait for beer and menu, but she was the only server and it was friday night. Hot chicks in the establishment. The wings were only average. The sauce was good, and had a bit of a bite to it, but parts of the wing skin were not cooked enough, and some were mushy, whereas other parts were solid and too deep fried. But overall, just average wings. The medium hot sauce had no or very little Franks, and the blue cheese sauce, although good, was largely runny and just blue cheese dressing. The wing ambiance was just average (hotel bar/lounge atmosphere). I wouldn't recommend visiting this establishment just for the wings. But for drinks and dinner with a chick, not a bad spot.
